Making your own CBD gummies is easier than it looks, costs less than buying them, and — best of all — lets you control exactly what goes in. This simple recipe uses everyday ingredients plus your favourite CBD oil, and includes the one step most recipes skip: how to work out the CBD in each gummy.

The short version: To make CBD gummies at home you’ll need CBD oil, fruit juice or puree, gelatin or pectin, and a sweetener. Warm the liquid, whisk in the gelatin until dissolved, remove from heat, stir in your CBD oil, pour into moulds, and chill until set. Divide your total CBD by the number of gummies to know the amount per piece.

Ingredients

  • 1 cup fruit juice or puree (berry, orange, or mango work well)
  • 3 tbsp gelatin (or 2–3 tbsp pectin for a vegan version — see the variation)
  • 2–3 tbsp sweetener (honey, maple syrup, or sugar), to taste
  • Your CBD oil — amount depends on how strong you want each gummy (see dosing below)
  • Optional: a squeeze of lemon, or a pinch of citric acid for tartness

You’ll also need a silicone gummy mould and a small whisk.

Step-by-step

  1. Warm the liquid. Pour the juice or puree into a small saucepan over low heat. Keep it gentle — high heat is the enemy of CBD.
  2. Bloom and dissolve the gelatin. Sprinkle the gelatin over the warm liquid a little at a time, whisking constantly until fully dissolved and smooth (no lumps).
  3. Sweeten. Stir in your sweetener and any lemon/citric acid until combined.
  4. Cool slightly, then add CBD. Take the pan off the heat and let it cool for a minute. Stir in your measured CBD oil thoroughly so it’s evenly distributed — adding it off the heat helps protect the CBD.
  5. Fill the moulds. Using a dropper or small spoon, fill each cavity. Work reasonably quickly before the mixture starts to set.
  6. Chill. Refrigerate for at least 1–2 hours, until firm. Pop them out, and store in an airtight container in the fridge.

How to calculate the CBD per gummy

This is the part that actually matters, and it’s simple:

CBD per gummy = total CBD added ÷ number of gummies

For example, if you add 300 mg of CBD and the batch makes 30 gummies, each gummy is 10 mg (300 ÷ 30). To find the total CBD you’re adding, check your oil’s concentration (mg/mL) and how many millilitres you put in.

A few tips:

  • Mix thoroughly so the CBD is spread evenly — otherwise some gummies will be stronger than others.
  • Start with a modest amount per gummy (many people aim around 5–10 mg) so it’s easy to keep track.
  • Label the container with the per-gummy amount so you don’t forget.

Tips for better gummies

  • Keep the heat low. Gentle warmth preserves the CBD; boiling does not.
  • Pectin sets differently from gelatin — it may need a touch of sugar and acid to set properly, and it makes the recipe vegan.
  • Storage: keep them in the fridge in an airtight container. Homemade gummies don’t have preservatives, so use them within a couple of weeks. (Curious about CBD shelf life in general? See Does CBD Oil Expire?.)

Vegan variation

Swap the gelatin for pectin (about 2–3 tbsp, following your pectin’s package ratio). Pectin usually needs a little sugar and acidity to gel, so include the sweetener and the lemon/citric acid. The method is otherwise the same.

The bottom line

Homemade CBD gummies come down to four things — juice, a gelling agent, sweetener, and your CBD oil — plus a quick bit of division to know the amount per piece. Use a clean, lab-tested oil as your starting ingredient (browse our CBD oils), keep the heat low, and start with a modest amount per gummy.

This recipe is for personal use with legally purchased CBD. It’s general information, not medical advice — start low and talk to a healthcare provider if you have any questions about CBD and your health.

Frequently asked questions

How much CBD should I put in each gummy?
Decide your total CBD, then divide by the number of gummies (e.g., 300 mg ÷ 30 = 10 mg each). Many people start around 5–10 mg per gummy. Mix thoroughly so each one is consistent.

Do homemade CBD gummies expire?
Yes — without preservatives they’re best used within a couple of weeks and kept refrigerated in an airtight container. Store-bought gummies last longer; see our guide on CBD shelf life.

Can I use any CBD oil to make gummies?
A clean, lab-tested CBD oil with a clear concentration (mg/mL) works best, because you need that number to calculate the dose per gummy. Flavoured oils can work but may affect taste.

Why add the CBD oil off the heat?
High heat can degrade CBD. Adding it once the mixture is off the heat and slightly cooled helps preserve it while still mixing in evenly.

Can I make CBD gummies vegan?
Yes — use pectin instead of gelatin. Pectin usually needs a little sugar and acidity (like lemon) to set properly; the rest of the method is the same.
